The Turku Suzuki School was established in 2009 and it is a private musical institute providing basic education in the arts. The school operates at two different locations: in Turku’s town centre (Luostarinkatu 5) and in Hirvensalo (Pitkäpellonkatu 2). The Suzuki School employs the international Suzuki Method as a teaching method which is considered as natural and child-centered way of learning music. The schools offers piano, violin, cello, voice and guitar lessons for all ages from children to young people and adults. There are also groups for Early Childhood Education at ages ranging from infants up to children age nine.
The school organises several concerts per year and the pupils perform in many different cultural happenings like Turku’s Night of the Arts and the Children’s Music Festival. To find our next concert, please consult our Concert Calendar.
The Suzuki School takes in new pupils in the sign up order. It’s also possible to start taking lessons in the middle of a semester, if there are free places. The school organises a Suzuki-info for new families twice a year before starting instrument lessons.
With the Suzuki Method, one may start taking instrument lessons starting from the age of three together with one’s parents. In the lessons, are emphasized individuality and the joy of playing music. You can also start taking instrument lessons as a young or an adult. The purpose of the Suzuki Method is to nurture a heart, which was accomplished through the cultivation of this ability. Dr. Suzuki hoped to help children grow into happy and rounded individuals, and wished to see them flourish in and beyond a musical setting.
The stronger the musical environment, the easier and more successful the natural learning. The Suzuki learning environment includes: individual weekly lessons with another pupil, group classes every other week, a home practice and listening programme daily, participation in concerts and workshops, absorption of the musical mastery of professional artists by listening to recorded music and attending live concerts.
The children work usually in pairs. The pair lesson’s duration is from 45 up to 60 minutes, depending on pupil’s age. Half of this duration, your child has his/her own individual lesson and the remaining half of the lesson your child spends listening to his peer playing. The pupils learn much just by listening.
When the pupil is young, the role of the parents is very important. It’s the parents’ responsibility to create the musical environment for the child. The parents participate to the lessons by playing music themselves and/or taking notes during the lessons and should practice daily with his/her child at home. The parents are the persons who play the Suzuki CD every day at home. The more familiar the Suzuki programme is, the easier it is to learn.
Group lessons are one of the wonderful ‘perks’ of the Suzuki method – supplementary to individual lessons but just as important! Your child will be extremely motivated by playing alongside his or her peers, and of course, this accelerates the rate of learning as they absorb ‘strengths’ from each other. Being part of a regular group is also beneficial for you, as Suzuki parents! You will get to be part of a smaller circle of our community, and the support system you, your teacher, and your children will form will be an invaluable motivation for all. Aside from the social aspect that group lessons provide, the students will be learning and honing the following skills and reaping the following benefits. T

More information about the Suzuki Method:
In the Early Childhood Music Education every child receives elementary instruction in music and musical skills through positive experiences. The child’s sense of melody and rhythm develops while singing, playing games, listening to music, moving and dancing in harmony with music. In this way the child is led to develop an interest in music. The earlier you start your child’s talented education, the easier and more successful the natural learning will be. Because we use the same Suzuki music as in the instrument lessons, the songs will be familiar to the pupils when they start the instrument lessons. Beyond the Suzuki material, we lissen to classical music, folk songs and children’s music.
The lessons are based on the Suzuki Method. By creating the musical enviroment for the child, we hope to help children grow into happy and rounded individuals, and wished to see them flourish in and beyond a musical setting. I am 36-year old musician, guitarist and guitar teacher. I find music as deep humane need, a way
to deal with emotions, as much with joy and sorrow. In my opinion, music gets people together,
enriches daily life, refreshes and inspires to sit for hours with an instrument, despite of missing
a bus or forget some other duty.
MetaphoricalIy speaking, I believe that everybody can find his or her own island in a pacific of
music. Everybody can find inspiration to find new paths in music or stay to taking care of tree
already planted by oneself. It is true, that endless repeating plays a big role in learning an
instrument, but it is not just boring, if a child raises in permissible, openminded ja musically rich
enviroment.
